Performance Area: Traditional performances that are fun to watch and more fun to participate in In Korean Folk Village, exciting music is heard several times a day because of the performances held here and there. In Market Village located in front of the main entrance, witty madanggeuk play and splendid dance parade take place three times a day.To feel the excitement of traditional Korean performances properly, don’t miss out what takes place twice in the main performance area. Pungmulhangarak (non-verbal performance of traditional Korean music and dance) starts with the heart-pounding sound of drums. The lively percussion, graceful fan dance, humorous lion dance, and exciting performances encourage the audience to jump on stage and join the dance. Samdopangut (dynamic performance and dance with cheerful traditional music) offers loads of things to see: Yeoldubal Sangmonori, wherein a performer rotates a long ribbon attached to his hat; Sangmonori, wherein a performer rotates a long ribbon attached to his hat while moving around the place touch-and-go; andBeonanoreum, wherein a performer rotates a plate placed at the top of a stick without dropping it. Sometimes audiences are given the chance to do the dish-rotating act as well.

Large Landowner's House in the Southern Part: A place where graceful architecture and cozy garden greet visitors Reflecting the mild climate of the southern region, the house is characterized by the charming garden with seasonal flowers and elegant curves of the buildings. Step inside and observe how the wealthy lived in southern Korea.Even the chimneys and fences are decorated. Women performed dadeumijil to flatten the wrinkles of laundered cloth, pounding it with special bats. Visitors can participate in the activity by sitting on the floor and beating out a rhythm. Outside the house are colorful cloths hanging along the street, a replica of the Street of Dyeing Places and the best photo spot in KFV. Passing through the cloths, one will smell a bitterish smell. Turn left toward the source of the smell, and you will find a medical facility that acted as both hospital and pharmacy.Oriental medicinal herbal tea is available there for guests to sit on the heated floor and enjoy sibjeondaebotang (Shiquan Dabu whole duck soup) made with long-simmered healthy ingredients. The fatigue will disappear right away.

Nobleman’s Mansion: Be a guest at a traditional wedding in the grand house It is a mansion of a “yangban (nobleman),” who has the greatest power and wealth. Several buildings are spread on a wide ground, but they have no more than a total of 99 kans (one kan refers to the distance between pillars) as the royal palace alone can have more than 100 kans. The residence consists of anchae (main building) for women, sarangchae (detached building) for men, haengrangchae (servants' quarters), and many rooms for guests with architectures and gardens unique to each space.The 99-kan mansion was built in Suwon in 1861 but rebuilt in KFV, keeping the original form. There are areas divided by exits, made up of gardens and architects in different styles. Be an Alice in Wonderland and explore all the way to the deepest end of the villa. In Korea, weddings used to take place in the front yard of a nobleman’s house. To demonstrate the event, traditional weddings are held twice a day at the site. The groom and the bride arrive at the groom’s house on a horse and in a palanquin, respectively, and join the ceremony. Visitors can participate in it as a guest or sign up in advance and become the groom and bride themselves (KRW 80,000 for two).

Local Government Office: Where the guilty are punished! While walking around KFV, visitors encounter lively characters from the Joseon period: a beggar singing songs, a merchant telling enchanting stories about products, a naming specialist claiming to give an auspicious name.Take fun photos with them and follow the directions they provide. Be careful, though, lest you get arrested by traditional police officers and get punished in a local government office!How do you think the guilty were punished during the Joseon Dynasty? At the time, the local government office was performing not only administrative works but judicial ones as well. Trials on suspects were carried out in the front yard of the government office; if found guilty, suspects were punished with flogging or other forms of torture. Visitors can sign up for the gonjang experience or the traditional Korean penalty of flogging the buttocks of a person who prostrates on a wooden frame. As the experience program is very popular, however, the queues can be long. And don't forget to make a realistic facial expression in front of the camera!Around the office building are a wide playground for traditional games such as tuho (arrow-throwing), yut nori (board game), and traditional rope skipping and an equestrian place to ride a horse like old generals did.

Visitors can taste the foods they ate, join the games they played, participate in activities they did, and watch performances and parades. Visit rich houses where nobles lived, poor houses inhabited by commoners, government offices, medical facility, schools, and education houses. The village is also well-known as a filming of popular Korean movies and drama series, such as Dae Jang Geum (Jewel in the Palace) that was aired in 99 countries, the Netflix original drama Kingdom, and My Love from the Star starring Jeon Ji-hyun and Kim Soo Hyun to name a few.Why not search for familiar places featured in the films and dramas and pose just like the actors and actresses did in the scenes? Or rent a hanbok costume and stroll around the old streets as if time-traveling to five centuries ago. Sansuhwa Building: Walk in nature accompanied by chirping birds and water Sansuhwa refers to oriental paintings of nature with mountains and rivers. Sansuhwa Building together with the path along the little stream surrounding the building offers great scenery to take the best shot with the nature of Korea as backdrop.Across the stream path are a variety of trees such as lilacs, Korean pine trees, plum-leaved apple trees, and azaleas, with colorful flowers including gentians, peonies, royal azaleas, and liriopes filling the garden. As different flowers are planted based on the season, gorgeous flowers are there anytime in spring, summer, and autumn. A mini-windmill, a heart-shaped bench, and other tiny pretty sculptures also ensure that the pictures you take are nothing but lovely. As the designated photo zone of the garden, Sansuhwa Building is full of various props like cone hat, hair bands, teddy bears, mini-Pinocchio, and tiny chairs. Families with children, couples, and friends can take fun photos against such backdrop. Just note that shoes should be removed before entering here unlike in other places.Outside Sansuhwa Building runs a fierce stream from the mountain at the back. The clear sound seems to wash off even the ears. Situated at the highest ground of the Greem, the spot offers an unhindered view of the garden, and the benches on the side provide a place to chat or relieve stress. There is an accessible ramp prepared for the elderly and disabled. A promenade is set to be made in 2020, leading to the mountain at the back for visitors to enjoy more of nature.

Sketch Building: Healing time in a classic European cafe Everything one can lay one's eyes on, from the exterior of the building to the inside corners, looks like a painting by a European painter. Greenhouse Plants Experience Hall: Get the shot of a lifetime against the backdrop of the charming flowerbed The greenhouse can be found right after the entrance. Thus, visitors can either get a beverage at Suchaehwa (Watercolor Painting) Building first and enjoy it together with the scenery or choose to take photos first and then exchange it with something to quench their thirst.A must-visit place is the Greenhouse Plants Experience Hall, where flowers bloom across all seasons. Bouquets and accessories such as hats are available for photo takers to capture images that match the names and colors of flowers. The Greem's iconic facilities include Suchaehwa (Watercolor Painting), Sansuhwa (Landscape Painting), and Sketch Buildings, but don't skip the red clay room made up of wood and red clay, the restrooms that looks like a special separate room of a garden, the fairytale kingdom for children, and the parrot that says Anyeong ("hello" in Korean).The not-so-large garden takes about half an hour to explore, but locating the filming spots of dramas starring Song Joong-ki and Lee Min Ho may require longer time.

Jisudang: A tranquil pavilion above a pond Namhansanseong is about 12 km (7.5 miles) long, housing some 200 cultural heritage. Most of the buildings are military-related in one way or another, but Jisudang is an exception. Built by Yi Se-hwa in 1672, the pavilion was visited by officials who wanted to enjoy fishing.It is said that there was another pavilion opposite Jisudang, dubbed Gwaneojeong (meaning “stepping onto a pavilion to see and enjoy fish.” By this, one can imagine that the officials at the time amused themselves by fishing at the lake or by writing poems or listening to music about fish. Still, even this seemingly peaceful place has traces of the invasion of the foreign army. Near Jisudang and at the back of the Gwaneojeong site is a gravestone standing in memory of the achievements made by Seo Heun-nam during the war. Born and raised as a slave, Seo dressed as a beggar to go about the Qing soldiers and collect intelligence when the fortress lost contact with the outside world and it was besieged by foreign troops in 1637.The movie the Fortress, which depicts the story surrounding Namhansanseong during the invasion, also features a figure inspired by Seo. It is not allowed to enter into Jisudang Pavilion, but there are tall trees lined with little benches and promenades in between prepared for visitors. Right next to it are restaurants as well as a store for the hungry.

Sueojangdae: With a sad story and a graceful view Jangdae from Sueojangdae refers to a tall building made for a commander-in-chief to stand on the highest place and control the army to guard against alien attacks. Thus, Sueojangdae is located on the highest ground of the fortress, between the West Gate and the South Gate. As a facility on the west, it is also known as Seojangdae (west jangdae). There were originally five jangdaes in Namhansanseong, but only one remains today.With the design that is most magnificent among the buildings in Namhansanseong and an unhindered view of the fortress and Seoul City, Sueojangdae is one of the most visited spots. Especially the night view of S. Korea’s capital, which is filled with glittering lights, is famous for the splendor. In the yard of Sueojangdae is a stone engraved with letters that read “Sueoseodae.” Also called “hawk stone” or “general stone,” it relates to a story of the late Yi Hoe, who died after being falsely accused of embezzling the construction funds of the fortress. It is said that, when he was beheaded, a hawk flew over, perched on the stone, and left clear footprints. They are now gone, but the mysterious story has long attracted many who worshiped and made wishes to the stone. It is still open to who those who have wishes and dreams.

Yeonmugwan Hall: Where the military practiced their skills The hall was built in 1624 for the fortress-guarding soldiers to hone their skills. In line with the objective, the structure looks powerful and competent. Warriors deemed to have excellent ability were picked and sent to Seoul.One particularly eye-catching object in Yeonmugwan is a zelkova. The massive, more than 500-year-old tree is a witness to the events that happened in Namhansanseong. Under the tree branches is a little shelter for wearied visitors to catch their breath. It is also a great photo spot where the hall is seen most beautifully. Capture the red architecture standing in stark contrast to the green trees appearing above the stone steps. Next to the military area is the Iateo site, where a government office called Ia or Jeseungheon originally stood. The former huge construction made up of 18 buildings has left no traces apart from the site.

Hyeonjeolsa Temple: Where loyal subjects are honored When the forces from the Sino-Manchu Qing dynasty besieged Namhansanseong where the Joseon king was taking refuge, officials were divided over whether to surrender to the foreign state or to keep fighting against them. Eventually, the king gave in to Qing, and the opposing three (Hong Ik-han, Yun Jib, O Dal-je), who refused to budge till the end, were taken to the neighboring country and executed. Hyeonjeolsa Temple is an altar to honor the spirit of the three subjects.The temple is open to the public on weekends in April through October, from 10 am to 16 pm, during which services are offered and etiquette training is held. Participants can have a hands-on opportunity to experience the atmosphere of valuing loyalty and Korean culture. The etiquette trainees learn how to pay tribute properly. One of the manners include gongsubeop, the way of laying two hands together to bow, or to show respect to seniors. Men are to put the left hand on the right hand, whereas women are to do it vice versa. With the hands lightly placed on the belly button, one should bow slightly.Moreover, to climb the stairs on the temple, one should use the right foot first to put both feet together side by side. To descend, however, the left foot should move first before both feet meet. Gates in the temple consist of three sections, and passers should be on the right to enter and on the left to exit. The middle should be left empty as it is where the deity passes.

Haenggung: King’s temporary shelter Namhansanseong Fortress is where King Injo of Joseon Dynasty took refuge away from the 1936 invasion of the army of the Qing Dynasty before eventually giving in to the attackers. Today, it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage, and its outstanding universal value is recognized globally. One of the places that embody the excellency of Namhansanseong is the haenggung. A haenggung refers to a place where a king temporarily stays during his trip to outside the palace in Seoul.There are some 20 haenggungs spread in Korea, but the one in Namhansanseong is the only place with jongmyo (royal ancestral shrine) and sajik (altar), which represent the royal family and the nation. It suggests that the site played the role of a provisional capital during state emergencies or wartimes. Solli Restaurant: Attracting visitors with its delicate taste of tradition The Solli Restaurant ('sol' means 'pine' and 'ri' means 'village') is a traditional Korean cuisine restaurant situated amid some 500 pine trees. Selected as a "Best Restaurant" and certified with the K-RIBBON mark, Solli Restaurant serves refined and delicious dishes using Seoil Farm's traditional produce.You must take off your shoes in the hall before entering the restaurant's dining room, which consists of traditional low tables and chairs. The restaurant also has a room for foreign visitors who prefer sitting at a high table to sitting on the floor. You can easily choose a dish from the menu as it contains descriptions of all the dishes in English along with photos. Furthermore, as the restaurant offers refined, delicate dishes that are neither too spicy nor too strong-tasting, you can enjoy them comfortably. The menu includes such classic dishes as soybean paste stew, rich soybean paste stew, pureed soybean, pickled Japanese apricots, pickled garlic, tofu dishes, buckwheat pancake, kimchi, and Korean-leek kimchi.Known principally for its unique aroma, Cheonggukjang (fast-fermented bean paste) has also been praised as a wholesome food by international medical magazines. Cheonggukjang contains genistein and saponin, which are known to have an anticancer effect, as well as lecithin and proteolytic enzyme, which are effective in dissolving blood clots and cholesterol. In addition, it is high in fiber, which helps with constipation, and is rich in vitamins K and B12, which are effective in improving osteoporosis and anemia. Steam Sterilization Room: Tofu and Meju (Blocks of Fermented Soybeans) made with Korean soy beans The steam sterilization process consists in adding water into the ingredients to be fermented and then steaming the mixture to sterilize it. In other words, the process consists of boiling and steaming the ingredients, which is the most important primary process when making traditional Korean pastes and sauces. Seoil Farm uses thirteen traditional cauldrons in this process. The ingredients are boiled on a high heat for three hours and then simmered over a low heat for three more hours.The procedure for making meju consists in soaking soybeans in water, boiling and steaming them in a cauldron, grinding them using a mortar, shaping the ground soybeans into a rectangular block, drying them a first time, fermenting them, leaving them for a while, tying up the blocks with woven straw strings and, finally, hanging them up to dry. Bacillus subtilis, which is present in straw, are good bacteria for our body and help meju to ripen well without going bad. As bacilli are living organisms, they are easily affected by air, moisture, temperature, and the surrounding environment. Therefore, Seoil Farm operates a separate ripening room to ensure optimum fermentation and prevent contamination. After putting the meju in a crock, salt water is added by mixing natural bedrock water - drawn from 150 meters below ground at Seokyeonjeong Pavilion - with bay salt.After the ripening period, soy sauce is produced from the liquid in the crock, while the remaining meju is made into doenjang by pounding it and adding salt, or into gochujang by drying and pounding the remaining meju and mixing it with malt, glutinous rice flour and red chili pepper powder. Therefore, meju is the basic ingredient of traditional sauce and pastes.

Platform for Crocks: A tidy display of around 2,000 crocks These 2,000 traditional crocks contain fermented sauces and pastes such as gochujang (red chili paste), doenjang (soybean paste), ganjang (soy sauce) and cheonggukjang (quick-fermented bean paste); dozens of pickled vegetables made with Japanese apricots, garlic, chili peppers, medicinal plant (siler divaricata), and wild chives; Japanese apricot vinegar; and kimchi, all of which are made according to our ancestors' native wisdom and recipes.Traditional crocks are also known as 'breathing pots' as they are dotted with many fine holes which allow air and moisture to circulate inside and outside them. These crocks can preserve the food inside them for anywhere from three to ten years. In particular, pickled Japanese apricots and vinegar are made with Seoil Farm's produce. No one is allowed to enter the platform of crocks. A geumjul (straw garland) decorated with red chili peppers, pine twigs and beoseon (traditional Korean socks) is hung in front of this platform. According to the traditional custom, people would hang a geumjul to warn people not to enter the house where a baby was born as it was believed to ward off evil spirits.In this case, it has been hung there to keep the sauces and pastes in the crocks safe from evil and unwanted spirits. The pine twigs signify the freshness of the food; the red chili peppers mean good maturation; and the beoseon represents a prayer for preservation of the original taste of the food even if the food inside the crock goes bad.

Lawn Plaza: A lawn park amid 500 pine trees Seoil Farm makes its traditional pastes, sauces and pickled vegetables with organic ingredients that it cultivates itself, including fruit at its pear and Japanese apricot orchard, and vegetables such as beans and red chili peppers. As the farm cultivates its fruit and vegetables organically public access to the orchards and fields is restricted. However, the rest of the farm is open to the public.The farm is also known for its beautiful seasonal views - particularly plum blossoms and Satsuki azaleas in spring, water hyacinths and lotus flowers in summer, and Pink Muhly Grass and cosmos flowers in autumn - which attract many visitors seeking memorable photo opportunities. The farm has also been used as a shooting in a number of TV dramas. The Haneul Plaza, a large playground surrounded by pines, is a popular place for children, especially in spring and autumn. However, visitors are not permitted to cook or bring any food, other than simple beverages, here. Situated next to the Haneul Plaza is a smaller plaza called Cheonji Plaza, which is fenced with white Satsuki azaleas. You can enjoy a pleasant stroll along the walking path, which extends from the two plazas to the Jangdokdae Observatory. Please note that no pets, scooters or bikes are allowed on the path.

Entrance Plate: A Farm with the Subtle Scent of Pine When it comes to Korea's traditional food, one inevitably thinks of doenjang (soybean paste) and gochujang (red chili paste) as well as kimchi. As such traditional foods are made by a process of fermentation they require considerable effort and care, because they can easily go off during the fermentation process. Situated amid a small forest consisting of some 500 pine, oak, hackberry and zelkova trees, Seoil Farm (100,000㎡) has been making its traditional sauces and pastes forover 30 years according to its own special secret recipe, which has been transmitted across four generations. Currently, their products are made by artisan Seo Bun-rye. Traditional Korean sauces and pastes are excellent slow foods which have been promoted as part of a campaign to oppose fast food. Although their production is rather difficult and time-consuming, they are prepared with great care in a traditional way that also preserves the natural ecology.The parking lot is free, and visitors can use the free Wi-Fi service (Wi-Fi name: 58AC, Password: 0000009220) throughout the farm. Seoil Farm's convenient facilities include a caf? and a restaurant with restroom. The entire farm is a no smoking zone, but there is a small smoking zone situated next to the parking lot.
