The Third Tunnel

The Third Tunnel Exploration Route: Meet the History of National Division This route is recommended for people who would rather use the monorail than walk. As stated above, the third tunnel was discovered in 1978 and is 1,635 meters long, 2meters wide and two meters high, sufficient space to allow 30,000 soldiers to move through the passage every hour. Based on intelligence provided by a North Korean defector, soldier Kim Bu-seong, PVC pipes were inserted into the ground and the points where explosions had occurred were searched thoroughly.Walking tourists are required to wear yellow safety helmets, monorail tourists blue helmets. As the walking tour may be a little strenuous due to the incline, the monorail is recommended for fragile or elderly persons. However, there may be a queue, so please check the boarding time in advance. Visitors are asked to wait on the benches before boarding, and to return all recording devices such as mobile phones as instructed by the guide.Please note that the monorail descends a steep slope for 300 meters, which is about the height of a 25-story building, right after departure so make sure that you are fit enough. Passengers can get off at the underground platform, take a round trip on foot, or return on the monorail.

Park: A Quiet Park Where Roe Deer and Cats Run Freely The Peace Park is the freest photo zone in the Third Tunnel tour. There is a spring where golden roe deer drink water, as well as old railway tracks and sculptures.The iconic photo zone, “Railroad,” is marked with the departing cities of Busan to Seoul on one side and destinations in the North on the other, delivering a message of hope for a unified Korean Peninsula. If you’re lucky, you may come across the roe deer, the symbol of the roe deer & spring water sculpture, or some cats walking proudly around the park.Despite the pain and tensions caused by national separation, the DMZ has remained unspoiled for over six decades, ironically preserving the peaceful natural environment.

DMZ Video Hall: The Pains of National Division The Video Hall projects an 8-minute video clip about the situation in South and North Korea from the armistice until now, and shows the sufferings of war, and the armistice. Unfortunately, there are no foreign language subtitles as yet, but the video is well worth watching for anyone who is interested in the war, the cease-fire, the historical significance of the truce line, and the pain of war.The flame on the acrylic wall at the hall entrance is called the “Fire of Memory”. It was created to remember the painful Korean War which claimed some 6 million lives. The war, which lasted 3 years and 1 month, took countless young lives. The fire model, which will never be quenched as it is artificial, was created to commemorate their sacrifice and to remind us of the heart-breaking history of the nation, which must never be repeated.

The Third Tunnel Model, Unifying the Earth: A Message of Peace and Happiness Though visitors may regret not being able to take photos in the tunnel, there is a model of the Third Tunnel complete with life-sized statues of Military Policemen wearing “Military Police” armbands that every Korean Wave fan will recognize from the movie Joint Security Area and the TV drama Descendants of the Sun.After taking some photos, why not take a good look at the “Unifying Earth” sculpture in the middle of the Third Tunnel square. Created to express hopes for a unified Korea and world peace, the sculpture consists of a big arch representing a Korean railway line that will cross the Korean peninsula to Europe and two hemispheres desiring unification.You can create some amusing poses for photos by pushing the hemispheres from both sides. Here visitors will feel the message of peace and happiness amid vestiges of opposition and conflict that have existed ever since the Korean War broke out on 25 June 1950, and feel our hopes for a brighter future on the Korean Peninsula.

The Third Tunnel Walking Tour Route: Encounter the History of the Division Discovered in 1978, the third tunnel is 1,635 meters long, 2 meters wide, and 2 meters high, creating sufficient space for some 30,000 soldiers to move through the passage every hour. When the “closest tunnel to Seoul” was found, North Korea claimed that the South had dug it in order to invade the North across the border. However, the claim was obviously false as the traces of explosions during the digging of the tunnel only face south. Facilities have been installed at the tunnel to allow group visitors from home and abroad to explore the underground passage by foot or via an elevator with the help of a guide. It is possible to enter (on foot or by monorail) the 73-meter-deep underground pathway, but it takes less time to walk it than to wait for the 30-seat monorail as the queues can be long. Before entering, visitors to the third tunnel are required to leave all their belongings in lockers. Taking photos is prohibited, and safety helmets must be worn. After listening to the guide’s instructions, visitors can start exploring the walkable distance, which spans about 265 meters. The tour takes around 30 minutes, and visitors are recommended to keep order due to time constraints.Please note that some people (the elderly, people with high/low blood pressure or respiratory conditions, fragile, drunken or disabled) may be prohibited from entering the tunnel as there are steep, narrow inclines.

Unification Piano: The Sound of Barbed Wire The piano may look ordinary but its 88 strings are made of barbed wire brought from the demilitarized zone, the foremost symbol of national division. The instrument was created in 2015 to mark the 100th anniversary of Korea’s liberation from the Japanese occupation. The mini-documentary screened on the monitor won the bronze medal at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity in 2016.The song filling the space where the piano is on display is the Korean song Spring of Hometown. The lyrics by Yi Won-su describe the beauty of his old hometown and his yearning to return there. The lyrics and melody played by barbed wire that divided the nation strike a chord with many listeners. During the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympic torch relay ceremony, the relay theme song was played by the Unification Piano at the Observatory Square. In Search of Memories Video Hall: A Vivid Glimpse of the Old Hometown This hall offers visual reproduction of cities in North Korea. Viewers can choose to view either one or various cities from among Gaeseong, Haeju, Sariwon, Pyeongyang, Changjin or Hamheumg, or explore them all in order.Anyone can play the videos using the switches on the left-hand side of the hall, but needs to be considerate of other audiences. Subtitles are provided in Korean at the center and in English on the right for visitors who want to see vivid pictures of North Korea. The rooftop observatory offers distance views, whereas the video provides a closer look at streets, buildings, and many other features. This place is particularly cherished by members of dispersed families who can reach their unreachable hometowns in this visual way.

Wall of Commentary on South & North Relations: The History of Conflict and Reconciliation This exhibition introduces the main historical events from 1945 to 2018, including the history of conflict and reconciliation between South and North, by period.The display of photos is designed to show visitors how the two sister countries held a summit in 2000, engaged in exchange with each other until 2008, entered a 10-year-long standstill, and held another summit in 2018. Laid out behind the main exhibits are photos showing scenes from significant events from the breakout of the Korean War and the ceasefire agreement to the summits of 2000, 2007 and 2018. The clay models arranged at the center reflect the reunions of dispersed families that took place on several occasions.Above the models are actual lunch boxes and fruit provided by the North during those reunions, which are characterized by Korean-only product descriptions, unlike other food packagings marked in different languages.

After Unification: A Unified Korean Peninsula and the Future of Unification The benefits of unification of the Korean Peninsula are presented in a variety of graphs and drawings. This hall shows the future potential of unification, which could bring an end to the heavy financial burden of national division, generate huge economic gains, and usher in numerous social and cultural benefits.The main message is that national unification will bring new opportunities to develop the country’s tourism resources all the way from Mount Baekdusan in the North to Hallasan in the South, to grow through democracy into a stronger country with better human rights, and to achieve lasting peace and prosperity for all citizens. In particular, the display titled “Unified Korean Peninsula Linked to the World” on the far right of the exhibition showcases the potential of the Korean Peninsula in terms of culture and economy, driven by vertical/horizontal railway lines stretching to Mongolia, China, Russia and Europe, which are to be built after reunification.The map explains that the addition of the Korean Peninsula to Eurasian railway destinations will promote interaction and exchanges between the North and South as well as economic exchanges between the two Koreas with their neighboring countries. Note that the railways crossing the Korean Peninsula are marked as “TKR” and observe how the line connects Seoul, Busan, Mokpo in the South; Pyeongyang, Sinuiju, Hasan, Wonsan and Jejin in the North; and the two Koreas with neighboring countries.

My Dear Homeland: Paintings Based on Memory The small tiles covering the walls of the exhibition room on the second floor are paintings by North Korean refugees of their hometowns.Artworks depicting a stream running in front of an old house, the roads of a town, the writing of a neighbor's address, and the letter of a wife written on behalf of her late husband, who passed away without seeing his much-missed hometown, show just how these people longed to see their hometowns. As the world's only divided country, Korea has many separated and scattered families, although their number is declining over time. Established to console their feelings, the Odusan Unification Observatory is a must-visit destination for anyone who wants to learn more about the nation’s painful situation. On the right of the exhibition hall is the “Aromas of Unification” display, which features reproductions of the typical scents of various towns in North Korea. There are five basic aromas including wild berries in summer, pine trees on the Daedong River, corn in the North, the sea off Haeju, and sweet briers.These visual and olfactory representations of the intense yearnings of the dispersed families and their sincere hope for reunification provide visitors with a uniquely special experience.

Space of Spectacle: Garden with A Pond and Willow Trees This is the widest and the most Korean promenade in the garden. Visitors are sure to be enchanted by the picturesque scenery including a willow path, Musimgyo Bridge, Paryeongjeong Pavillion, Byeokgchopokpo Fall, Yeonhwawon and Yew Tree Garden.If you follow the lane located in a corner of the Space of Contemplation you will come to Byeokchoji. The breathtaking view of the pond, stretching from the end of the narrow line to the bright light is simply beyond words. Musimgyo Bridge connecting the pond and the forest path has a meaning of “Empty mind” or “No mind” and guides visitors to throw off their burdens and daily worries behind and walk on. Just beyond the bridge is Yeonhwawon (Lotus Garden) which is best admired from Paryeonjeong Pavillion. Why not pose for a photo against the background of the garden and capture the most beautiful scene of Yeonhwawon.When you are in front of Byeokchopokpo Fall, be careful and walk by quickly so as not to get wet. However, the spectacular scenery is worth seeing close up, so do not just pass by but have a good look.

Space of Anticipation: A Walk in the Garden Filled with Flowers and Plants The first space in the Botanical Garden BCJ welcomes visitors with a variety of strolling experiences through gardens from East and West, and along tranquil forest paths.Colorful flowers and neatly-arranged plants in the carefully groomed garden catch the eye. There are three trails available in the Garden of Queen, Bitsolwon, Hagyeongwon, which are full of flowers and plants representing the four seasons of Korea. Korean gardens do not simply contain plants but incorporate artificial hills, ponds, and architectures. So, it is recommended that visitors pay attention to the fountains and rocks dispersed around the promenades as well.Moreover, it is recommended to follow the order given in the guide to appreciate the trails of the Botanical Garden BCJ fully. Remember to take one of the tour guide leaflets from the entrance at the rear of Space of Anticipation.

Diverse programs including one-day classes, exhibition tours and activity packages are available. As advance reservation is unnecessary, anyone who applies on the spot can, with the assistance of an instructor, create their own colorful ceramic artwork, which is then dried, glazed and fired in a kiln, and delivered to the participant’s home as a truly special and lasting souvenir. No worries over a lack of gift in ceramic making. Ceramic Support Center: Home of the Ceramic Library The Ceramic Support Center provides ceramic-related materials both off and online, supports the development of new premium ceramic products, supports ceramic artists and groups, tests and analyzes ceramic products for the purpose of quality enhancement and new product development, and helps business related to exhibition and creation. The first floor of the Center houses Dojamangwondang, South Korea’s only book cafe dedicated to books on ceramics, which has a collection of 20,000 volumes available to everyone without charge. However, books can only be read on the premises and cannot to be taken outside. The book cafe is open from 9:00 to 18:00, and is closed on Mondays and public holidays. The Book Cafe also holds special lectures on a wide range of ceramics-related issues every Wednesday. For inquiries and reservations, please call +82-31-645-0620. Situated right next to the book cafe is a photo studio equipped with professional devices to reduce the work costs of the artists. On B1, the Korean restaurant “M” serves affordable meals including homemade-style Korean dishes at KRW 6,000 and instant noodles at KRW 3,000.

World Ceramic Center: Toya, Square, Art Shop The World Ceramic Center, the main building of Cerapia, is the venue of the Korean International Ceramic Biennale, which is hosted on alternate, odd-numbered years. The Center has four large exhibition halls showcasing ceramic works by artists from home and abroad, as well as a residency and a workshop where promising artists can concentrate on their work.The residency also offers advanced glass craft and ceramic craft classes to the public citizens four times a week (three hours per lesson). The glass craft courses include fusing, slumping, lamp walking, and blowing, while the ceramic craft courses include spinning wheel molding, slip casting, and hand molding. In addition, special courses are available during summer & winter school holidays. Information Board (Seolbong Park): Dreaming of a ceramic utopia Icheon Cerapia is one of the museums established by the Korea Ceramic Foundation, along with Yeosu Dojasesang and Gonjiam Ceramic Park. Cerapia, a composite of ceramic and utopia, is the name of a new concept of ceramic theme park linked to Seolbong Park. Here, everything from the restrooms, benches, building interiors to the exterior designs, playgrounds, and sculptures is ceramic. The main facilities include the World Ceramic Center (main building), which houses artists’ studios and art shops, the Ceramic Support Center, which contains a cafeteria and a ceramic library, and the Torak Class for ceramic experience activities. Some works of 30 ceramic by artists from Korea and overseas are displayed around Cerapia. The creativity inherent in these works, all of which can be touched and captured in photos, is very impressive.Big Toya, the emblematic ceramic character of Cerapia, stands at the entrance to Cerapia, not far from the ceramic exhibition and retail center run by Icheon City, while Doriwon, where visitors can learn tea etiquette and enjoy a cup of tea, is located under Sori Tree. Parking is free of charge. Restrooms are located at the entrance to Garosu-gil and in front of the Ceramic Support Center, while the Tourism Information Center is at the entrance to Garosu-gil. Free Wi-Fi is not available. The Korean restaurant in the basement of the Ceramic Support Center is open to visitors as well.

Sori Tree: Hidden Charms of the Ceramic Park Dori Tree, Cerapia’s main landmark, was created in 2007. This 5-meter-long sculpture consists of a stainless steel body and branches from which some 2007 ceramic wind bells are hanging. They represent the shape of clouds hanging in the tree. On a windy day, the bells shake and make pleasantly musical sounds.Just to the right of the entrance of the metasequoia-lined path stands the vivid red LOVE chair, which is popular among photo-takers, along with Modern Family and Butterfly chairs. Arranged around the chairs are various ceramic artworks such as Life Roots, Tree, Toya, Children, Pierrot, Earth Goddess, and Wind Goddess. At the end of the tree-lined path, strollers can enjoy tea and other beverages along with a light snack at Cafe Blossom. Situated next to the Sori Tree is the Icheon City Museum (+82-31-645-6377) which contains a History & Culture Room and a Ceramic Culture Room displaying 1,200 artifacts and handicraft works. Admission is free. Opening hours are as same as those of Cerapia.
